With guidance from caring adults and within a supportive community, children build confidence, curiosity, responsibility, and a lifelong love of learning.
Self-Directed Learning in the Sudbury Model
In the Sudbury model, self-directed learning is not simply encouraged, it is the foundation of the educational experience. Children are trusted to make meaningful decisions about how they spend their time, what they choose to learn, and how they engage with the world around them.
There are no prescribed lessons, year groups, or compulsory classes. Instead, learning happens naturally through play, conversation, projects, reading, creative pursuits, practical experiences, and participation in a vibrant democratic community. Children follow their interests, develop new skills when they need them, and learn from both success and challenge.
Adults at True Nature Sudbury School act as facilitators rather than traditional teachers. They provide guidance, encouragement, resources, and support when requested, while respecting each child's unique pace, interests, and developmental journey.
This freedom is balanced with responsibility. Every member of the school community has a voice and contributes to creating a respectful, safe, and inclusive environment through democratic decision-making. In this way, children develop not only academic knowledge but also confidence, independence, resilience, critical thinking, collaboration, and a strong sense of personal responsibility.
