Why Does True Nature Sudbury School Charge Membership Fees?

True Nature Sudbury School provides a democratic, self-directed model of education that operates outside the Department of Education’s prescribed curriculum. As a result, the school does not receive funding from the Department of Education to meet its staffing or day-to-day operational costs.

Membership fees are therefore essential to the running of the school. They are set on a cost-sharing basis and contribute towards expenses such as staffing, premises, insurance, utilities, educational resources and the ongoing development of the school community.

Unlike state-funded schools, and many private schools that receive government support towards staff salaries - True Nature must currently fund its operations independently. Membership fees form the school’s main source of reliable income.

To support the school’s long-term sustainability and help keep membership fees as accessible as possible, additional funding will also be actively sought through grants, charitable donations, community fundraising and other appropriate funding opportunities. Every contribution supports the continued growth of a nurturing, inclusive environment in which children and young people can learn freely, participate meaningfully and thrive.

Membership Fees (2026/2027 school year)

€5,000 per school year for first child of the family.
€4,000 for the second child of the family.
€2,000 for any additional children.

Membership Fees Payment Options (2026/2027 school year)

We offer several payment options to support families in managing their membership fees:

Pay in full: Pay the full annual membership fees in one payment.
Pay per term: Pay in two instalments, corresponding with the two terms in the school calendar year (September - December and January - July).
Monthly payments over 12 months (preferred option): Spread the annual membership dues evenly across 12 monthly payments. This is the school’s preferred payment option, as it provides consistent income throughout the year and supports financial planning.
Monthly payments over 10 months: Spread the annual membership fees across 10 monthly payments (September to June).

Payment plans of monthly instalments of school fees are agreed in advance.

True Nature Sudbury School is a privately funded school that does not receive government funding. To cover our operating costs, we charge school fees to all families. We also actively fundraise through donations, events, and volunteer efforts.
